Using a plan like this can keep you and your children safe. If you find yourself in an unsafe or abusive situation and need to leave immediately, being prepared can really help. Here are the things to have ready for when you need to get away:
- address book and important phone numbers (family, shelters, police)
- an escape route that you have previously practiced with your children
- a prearranged safe place to meet close by
- important documents, such as health care cards, ID, marriage certificate, copies of protection or restraining orders, insurance papers, birth certificates
- any medications for your and the children
- extra money for phone calls, hotels or public transit
- a bank account in your name
- photographs
- extra clothing, as much as you can carry
- household lease payments, rental agreements or deeds
- house and car keys
